A funny letter about a musical commission undertaken by the composer and herald Alfred Scott Gatty which he concludes with a delightful caricatured self portrait on the grounds that 'My photo has not yet arrived...' Most of the 1877 letter which is written on a bifolium of headed paper (Ecclesfield Vicarage. Sheffield) concerns the detail of a tricky musical commission which Scott Gatty has accepted for which he requests a change in his correspondent's verse setting: 'What do you say to writing a second verse descriptive of the anxious time when the solders are absent and retain the same refrain as the first verse... ' otherwise he anticipates having to write two pieces of music 'which would not be satisfactory to the ear'.
