xii, pp 1-381 [2] Advertisement leaf. The last published work in his lifetime by Henry Home, a Scottish judge and Enlightenment figure. The book is bound in early nineteenth century half tan calf, lightly scuffed, with marbled edges, over grey paper covered boards in which the book was probably first issued. The text is complete with the final advertisement leaf for Kames' own Essays present here. The soft paper is foxed with some wrinkling close to the top corner in some pages close to the middle of the book, overall a very good copy. This late work brings together Kames intellectual interests in a treatise on education that stresses the importance of sensibility and the role of the emotions. Kames sat on the panel of judges which determined the Joseph Knight case which effectively outlawed slavery in Scotland; Adam Smith was a protege.
