(70 photos) Oblong folio albumen photograph album of modern and antique Egypt compiled by a British tourist: 'Mary Vaughan-Davies Photographs of Her Tour in Egypt with H I Gore During the Winter of 1894-1895'. Half pebbled brown morocco over pebbled cloth with 'Egypt' in gilt on the upper cover, nicked and worn around end of hinges and to extremities, stains to cloth but the binding is quite sound. Large albumen photographs (27x21cm) by a number of photographers which include Zangalle, Lekegian, Bonfils and Antonio Beato but the majority by Jean Pascal Sebah which are mounted on stiff cream card. Preliminaries badly stained and soiling to first few card surrounds; photographs generally very good condition. Vaughan-Davies's inscription appears on the verso of the first endpaper. The images begin with general overviews of modern Cairo including Vaughan-Davies' presumed tourist residence in Cairo: 'Hotel Continental' opposite a fine view of the 'Tomb of the Mamelukes and Citadel'. There is a single image by Legekian of the 'Funeral of Ismail Pasha' with numerous photographs of cityscape and antiquities nearby including the pyramids, sphinx, a mummy of Rameses II, a bas-relief of Cleopatra, Karnak, 'Beggars at Luxor', 'Bedouin encampment' etc. The monuments of ancient Egypt and the Biblical world figured prominently in the early years of photography to be followed by a generation of skilled Egyptian and Turkish photographers such as Beato and Sebah who catered to tourist travelers in the last quarter of the 19th century, shaping the impression of the Middle East at the time.
