pp [48] [48] (c 7500 words) Pair of octavo memorandum books, comprising the business diaries of Thomas Chapman of Richmond in Surrey - today a suburb of London. Buff paper covers, detached for 1804, intact for 1806 accompanied by a contemporary newspaper. Chapman appears to have been a land agent or perhaps surveyor working in London and surrounding area. A typical entry for 3rd January, 1804, runs: 'Rode to Shepperton where was a Bench of Justices - gave Captain Coggan an Account of Timber he is to pay for and what is to be paid to him.' There are regular trips to London by post-chaise on business with a survey of Sir William Gibbons' house at Stanwell in April 1804. Most of the entries have a single cross through them as if these working notes were later copied into another document. There are occasional personal notes such as the trip on August 30th 1804, 'Went to London by appointment - rode on Horse-back till within sight of Hammersmith Turnpike, when my Horse fell and sadly cut his Knees - did not receive any Injury myself having the kind protection of providence' - in fact Chapman even managed to attend his meeting at Will's Coffee House in Lincoln's Inn. The two memorandum books are accompanied by the County Chronicle and Weekly Advertiser for Essex, Herts, Kent, Surrey, Middlesex, Berks, Tuesday August 19, 1817 much of which is concerned with property transactions for the area covered by Thomas Chapman's work. These notebooks descended within the Chapman family to the publisher-turned-historian Guy Chapman who married the novelist Storm Jameson, before being sold at auction earlier this year.
