[ff] 18. Private publication seemingly not held in any British or American library of William Waldorf Astor's account of the provenance of his 1892 gift to his wife Mary Astor, the centuries-old 'Sancy' Diamond. Large quarto format (laid paper, horizontal chain-lines) dated on the title page to 1893 but without an imprint or limitation statement beyond 'Collected by William Waldorf Astor'. Turquoise buckram with 'Sancy Diamond' in gilt to upper cover, damp stain to tail of upper cover close to foreedge, yellow coated endpapers. Internally fine and not located in any institutional collection. When Astor made the gift of the diamond to his new wife he was one of the wealthiest men on earth. The Sancy which is a 55-carat diamond is thought to have been found in India: this publication charts its peregrinations through the hands of two French Kings - Henry III and Henry IV who sold it to the English King James I before it returned to Paris by way of James II, later forming part of the Napoleonic court and being shown at the 1867 Paris Exhibition, finally making it's way in 1892 to Mary Astor. In 1978, the Astor family sold the Sancy Diamond, returning it to France where it is now housed in the Louvre in Paris.
