[2 Vols] 'Jubilee Edition' inscribed on the half-title: 'Henry Fielding Dickens with loving greeting from Charles Dickens November 1886'. The inscription from the novelist's oldest son to his brother, the lawyer Henry F Dickens, was made in celebration of this re-publication of the novel which 'was [originally] written and published in 1836-7. Therefore this Annotated Edition, which appears fifty years afterwards, is called The Jubilee Edition'. The text was edited by Charles Dickens junior whose printed Preface followed by a lengthy Introduction precedes the text. The books are bound in the publisher's deep green cloth, top edge gilt, lightly rubbed, fading to gilt on spines, a little foxing to preliminaries. Pickwick Papers was Dickens' first novel and his personal favourite. As Charles Dickens Junior acknowledged in his introduction, 'How many editions "Pickwick" has gone through, and how many millions of copies of the book have been sold during the last fifty years it would be impossible to calculate.' A most attractive association copy.
