pp 442 A book inherited from E M Forster's father and uncle before him with the author's label on the marbled endpaper: 'This book belongs to E.M. Forster' and his father's bookplate opposite on the pastedown: 'E.M. Forster, [E lib. H.T.F.]' with a further presentation inscription on the first blank: 'H T Forster from his sincere friend M. Reeve. C.H. August 1859'. The book which appears as Item 64 in Heffer's 1971 Catalogue of books from Forster's library was first given to Forster's paternal uncle, Henry Thornton Forster, who died childless and unmarried in 1865, passing to Edward Morgan Llewellyn Forster and on to E M Forster himself. It is bound in smart polished blue calf, just a little rubbing to extremities and outer hinges. Forster was fascinated by the Thornton side of his family, writing a biography of Marianne Thornton, the last survivor of the Clapham sect, as she called herself, from whom he received a substantial legacy.
