[Ellis] xvi, pp 1-128 [Dana] [6] pp 1-124 [Cleveland] xii, pp 1-124 [Pringle] xvi, pp 1-116. A scarce publisher's compilation volume containing the 1840 Moxon edition of Ellis's 'Late Embassy to China' bound with the first British edition of Dana's 'Two Years Before the Mast' and two other travel books. This represents the first English printing of Dana, printed 'for the English Public from the favourable opinion entertained of it by officers of old standing in the British Navy.' Ellis's 'Journal of the Late Embassy' represents the third printing of this volume, with a new eight page introduction written in July 1840 which brings Sino-British relations up to date since its first appearance in 1817. There is a map opposite the title page and the text concludes with an Appendix containing the Address of the Select Committee to the Foo-yuen dating from May 1816 and the Itinerary. The book has a general title page from 1842 although the Dana printing predates this by a couple of years. This volume is not found in the British Library or Copac. The text is complete as issued although a binding error means the introduction to Pringle is bound out of order. The binding is in full calf with gilt decorations and morocco spine label, some rubbing and wear but sound. The rear hinge is starting at the foot of the spine. The book was given as leaving present between Eton contemporaries with an inscription on the front free endpaper: 'John Acland James from his sincere friend R T Boothby On his leaving Eton Election 1845.'
